Introducing Mindfulness-Based Psychedelic Therapy

At our Center, Psychedelic Therapy is a specific, multi-paradigm approach that includes working with a variety of psychedelics, cannabis and breathwork. It is not limited to psychotherapeutic techniques and assessments but also includes mindfulness practices, ceremony and ritual, somatic approaches and Earth-based spiritual orientations within a transpersonal paradigm.

Mindfulness-Based Psychedelic Therapy™ (MBPT)

Mindfulness-Based Psychedelic Therapy™ (MBPT), developed by Daniel McQueen, is a psychedelic therapy modality that integrates mindfulness practices, transpersonal psychotherapy and traditional guiding practices with somatically-informed trauma resolution practices and psychedelic medicines.

MBPT is the therapeutic modality that the Center for Medicinal Mindfulness teaches through Psychedelic Sitters School and is the modality our practitioners use during sessions with our clients. In it’s simplest terms, the modality teaches that the attuned presence of the therapist is central to the process and that “Awareness with Acceptance is the Healing.”

MBPT is an umbrella modality for facilitating psychedelic experiences with any psychedelic medicine. Primary therapeutic and spiritual orientations include:

  • Transpersonal Orientation
  • Mindfulness-Based
  • Somatic Orientation
  • Trauma-Informed
  • Transformational Alchemy & Parts Work
  • Earth-Based Spirituality & Western Mysticism
  • Progressive, Inclusive, and Consent-Based Values
  • Environmental, Social, and Racial Justice Informed

MBPT works within a wholistic “multi-paradigm” model that supports the use of psychedelic medicines in the four primary paradigms of use:

  • Spiritual/Religious
  • Psychological/Personal Growth
  • Creative/Aesthetics/Celebratory
  • Research/Problem Solving/Discovery
Mindfulness-Based Psychedelic Therapy

What is the difference between Psychedelic Psychotherapy and Psychedelic Therapy?

While Psychedelic Sitters School is clinically and medically informed, we incorporate perspectives that are in alignment with traditional psychedelic healing modalities, which we call “Psychedelic Therapy.” This is an umbrella perspective that includes but is not limited to psychotherapy but also includes spiritual practices and scientific research endeavors.

Psychedelic Psychotherapy is the skillful use of psychedelics in conjunction with psychotherapy by a licensed or registered psychotherapist, psychologist or other mental health professional. These sessions have a clinical purpose, for example, for the treatment of trauma/PTSD, depression, anxiety and other mental health concerns.

Psychedelic Therapy is a separate yet overlapping field and professional identity from psychedelic psychotherapy; it is not limited to clinical and medical models of practice or solely limited to clinical and medical practitioners. Many people from a variety of professions may practice as Psychedelic Therapists, particularly in group practices that incorporate multiple approaches. In our practice, Psychedelic Therapy can be used for the treatment of psychological concerns but it is also a full body/soul holistic practice that goes beyond conventional psychotherapy modalities currently in practice.

Cannabis-Assisted Psychedelic Therapy™ (CAPT)

Cannabis-Assisted Psychedelic Therapy™ (CAPT), developed by Daniel McQueen, is a central speciality of MBPT that combines the modality with the medicinal effects of Psychedelic Cannabis. We call cannabis the “Somatic Psychedelic” because it affects both the 5-HT2A receptor of the brain (which other psychedelics activate) as well as the endocannabinoid system in the body.  These sessions provide a full body and soul holistic experience that is deeply healing. Cannabis allows clients to have increased awareness of difficult somatic sensations, memories, mental programs, judgements, and anxieties, and this exploration leads to a resolution and healing of unhealthy processes and potential clinical concerns. CAPT elicits a deeper awareness of emotional processes and activates physical and emotional discharges leading to release and healing.
